Fantastic Scotland Vacations And Stranraer, Dumfries & Galloway

By Andrew Kelly

Scotland is a splendid destination in which to take a week or two's vacation. Scotland is perfect for an excellent selection of differing vacations, it has large areas of pretty countryside with comprehensive amounts of sites of outstanding natural beauty (perfect for hikers, mountain climbers, hill-walkers, ramblers and the likes). The nation also features some of the finest visitor attractions, including, some of the most fascinating galleries and museums in the whole of Great Britain, majestic sites of beauty, historical buildings, fortified houses, country houses and castles plus much, much more. In the following article I talk about Stranraer.

Stranraer is a town located in Dumfries & Galloway in southerly Scotland, the port is renowned for being the place where people can catch the ferry over to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Regrettably overwhelmingly people fail to explore the tourist attractions in and around the town. This is something of a puzzle, if you get to the town, and reserve a room in a Stranraer bed & breakfast, a couple of days early it would be possible to visit a couple of the visitor attractions before sailing to Northern Ireland.

There are a couple of places to visit in Stranraer including the medieval town house known as the Castle of St John located in the centre of the town. The Castle of St John was built at the very beginning of the 16th century as a residence for the Laird of Wigtownshire, Ninian Adair of Kilhurst. The building was renovated, in the years 1988/89, by the district council of Wigtown who opened it to the public in 1990.

Another attraction near to the town of Stranraer is Castle Kennedy Gardens. The castle forms the centrepiece of the garden which are located, between two lochs, on a hill (unfortunately access to the ruined castle is no longer allowed. The landscape gardens covers an area of 75 acres. You can buy plants from the store which has grown them from seed and plants in the garden.

Another pretty attraction to visit is Glenluce Abbey, less than 10 miles from Stranraer. Even though Glenluce Abbey is ruined (in truth the most ruined of 3 of Cistercian monasteries situated in this region of Scotland) it features a spectacular fifteenth century Chapter House. Other places worth consideration include, the Mull of Galloway, the Machars, Port Logan and Portpatrick.
