Find Melbourne Accommodation Tennis Options, Short Walk To Melbourne Park

By Jasmine Zahara

The Australian Open tennis tournament is the Grand Slam tournament of Asia/Pacific. The tournament is played on hard courts at Melbourne Park in the Australian state of Victoria. The Australian Open occurs annually during the month of January, which is of course during the Australian summer. This year (2010) the Mens' Singles were won by Roger Federer, and the Womens' Singles by Serena Williams. This Melbourne accommodation tennis article surveys some of the hotel accommodation in the city which is convenient for fans following this tournament.

The Australian Open is played at Melbourne Park Tennis Centre in Batman Avenue, just to the south east of Melbourne's Central Business District. One hotel just beyond the city centre end of Batman Avenue is the 4.5 star Medina Executive in Flinders Street. This is just under 700 metres from the Tennis Centre.

The Medina Executive is a seventeen storey building, with four car park levels. As well as being conveniently placed for the tennis, it is also near to Melbourne Cricket Ground, and just a couple of minutes by foot from Federation Square.

The Medina offers self contained apartments with one, two or three bedrooms. Apartments have good views, either across the Melbourne cityscape, or across the river and the bay. Rooms at the Medina Executive all have satellite TV, and there is a gymnasium available for the use of guests.

The Medina Executive is in an area of town with some of Melbourne's top restaurants and best theatres. Nearby restaurants include the Press Club, Fifteen and Movida. The Circle Tram line runs just past the Medina, and it is just a short ride to some other Melbourne sights such as the Queen Vic market, and Docklands.

As the Medina Executive is one of the closest hotels to the tennis and cricket grounds it can be expected to be fully booked during major sporting events, so early booking is advised. This hotel can be booked online at any good hotel accommodation website specializing in Australia/New Zealand travel.

The Hotel Lindrum, also on Flinders Street, is also just a short distance from the Australian Open venue. The Lindrum (59 suites and rooms) is a four star establishment. Full breakfast is served by the Lindrum's restaurant, and all rooms have CD/DVD players, satellite TV, high speed internet and tea/coffee making facilities.

As well as being convenient for tennis and cricket fans, both these Melbourne hotels are within easy reach of the Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex on Melbourne's Southbank Promenade, which is just across the St. Kilda Road bridge from Flinders Street. The Crown Casino complex was opened just over ten years ago, as part of the urban renewal project which transformed the Southbank Area.

Although the Crown complex boasts three hotels (Crown Towers, Crown Promenade, Crown Metropol) and many shops and restaurants, the largest business is the Crown casino. The Crown Casino has over 2000 poker machines, and 350 gaming tables, which make it the largest casino south of the equator. Hotels in the Crown Complex are a bit further from the tennis ground than the Medina and Lindrum, but still within reasonable walking distance.
