Machu Picchu Trips Provide World Class Memories

By Josie Stokes

Many people consider their Machu Picchu trips to be lifetime memories. This location is one that has only increased in popularity since it was declared to be a world wonder. When one visits the site, it's easy to imagine how it was to be alive in Peru 500 years ago.

A lot of people don't realize what a big country Peru is and how much time it can take traveling from one part to the next. It's best to give yourself about a week to get for a trip to Machu Picchu, even if you aren't going to do a trek. With a trek, you'll probably need more than that.

Most of the time, you'll need a day or two just to arrive at Cusco, from where all trips to Machu Picchu start. Once you get there, you'll need time to get used to the altitude, which is very high. There are lots of things to do in this area as you are acclimating.

You will probably be a lot happier if you don't try to rush through the time you have to spend in the area around Cusco. The city itself is a great place to spend a few days just enjoying the personality of it as well as the many museums and restaurants. The surrounding countryside, especially in the Sacred Valley, is really beautiful as well.

To reach Machu Picchu, you are going to have to either hike or go by train. If you're hiking, you are going to need a minimum of four days unless you're hiking the short version of the Inca Trail which takes two. Even if you go by train, you'll want a couple of days so you can arrive at the town nearby one day and visit the citadel the following one.

If you've got more time to give to your vacation, this can be combined with other trips around Southern Peru. Locations that can be included are the Nazca Lines, Arequipa, Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca. With sufficient time, you could also plan on visiting the jungle for a few days.

You can take Machu Picchu trips in as few as seven days or combine the site with others to take up many weeks of vacation. The ancient citadel is the most important place to visit in Peru, especially as a wonder of the world. Besides that, it just depends on how much time you've got and what interests you most.
