Useful Tips For Taking Medicine

By Adriana Noton

Many people have their own tips for taking medicine that they don't like or find hard to swallow. The challenge with a lot of medicines is that they taste nasty. Although the reasons for this are good, for example so that children do not mistake medicine for sweets, it doesn't make having to take it any easier.

Taking medicine you don't like can be done in several ways. How you do it will depend in part of what type needs to be taken, for example pills or a liquid. It's important to always read any labels or information leaflets that come with your medication as these can contain important information about how the medicine should be taken.

If swallowing pills is the part you have trouble with then there are a couple of things you could try. Some types of tablets will dissolve when placed in a liquid such as water. This may not improve the taste but may make them easier to take. You need to check that your type of pills are okay to be dissolved before trying this method.

Crushing pills to powder form is something else you could try. In powder form they are suitable for mixing with food, for example you could mix the powder with a spoonful of jelly, or you could sprinkle it over an entire meal. Before doing this you need to check that the tablets you are taking are safe to be taken with food.

Another method, which works whether your medication is in tablet or liquid form, is to give yourself a treat once you've had it. This could be anything from a piece of chocolate to five minutes peace and quiet on your own. The point is that it needs to be something you will consider a reward.

If the medication you need to take is in liquid form you could mix it with another liquid that you like the taste of. Always check the label to see if there are any restrictions on what you could use as the mixer liquid. Try to use as little additional liquid as possible so that you are not diluting it too much.

Routine is important when it comes to your medication. If you can get used to taking it at the same time each day there is much less chance of you forgetting it. If you just leave it until you remember you may end up missing doses and that could lessen the effect of the medication or have other side effects.

Get yourself a medication buddy to help you with taking your medicine. Often it is easier to do something we don't like if we have the support of another person to help us. They don't necessarily need to be with you in person, they could be at the end of a phone, but they may provide that little extra help that you need.

You can probably find far more tips for taking medicine during menopause than are listed here. It's the sort of things that is handed down through generations with each family having their own special methods. You may have to try a few before you find a method that suits you, but once you've found one you should find the whole process of taking medication a lot easier.
