Discover West Cornwall From Penzance A Great Starting Point.

By Ian Motram

Land End's nearest town is Penzance .

Penzance originally had a chapel close to its harbour so was known as 'Pen Sans' in traditional Cornish dialect, which means Holy Headland. Hundreds of years ago Penzance and the surrounding area were widely known as a best loved pirates haunt. Penzance itself has a rich heritage, dating back hundreds of years and the proof of its historical past is clearly evident today. The town has managed to retain its extraordinary character by implementing tight planning regulations.

Penzance has developed into a delightful artistic place with a great vibe. Receiving its initial Royal Charter in 1512 assisted its growth Originally a significant fishing town with the fishing industry as its key generator of wealth, it now caters successfully for the tourist industry and boasts a stable increase in tourism yearly due to its huge popularity.

It is straight forward to reach Penzance by road, despite the fact that it is right in the far nook of the United Kingdom. Also there are many good coach and railway links to the town.

Penzance is a great base for exploring west Cornwall. In comparison to the rest of Britain, Penzance has a very mild climate all year due to the Atlantic Gulf Steam.

In Victorian times, many exotic plants were brought into the local area and there are now stunning collections of tender trees and rare tropical plants growing there which are not found anywhere else in the United Kingdom. Because of its huge quantity of exotic plants, you may feel as if you are in the Mediterranean.

In June there is the hugely popular Golowan Festival, when thousands of visitors descend on Penzance making hotels and apartments hard to come by. The Golowan Festival is based on ancient tradition that marks the arrival of Midsummer. This ten-day festival treats visitors to a combination of colourful parades, live music, art and other entertainment. You can also enjoy spectacular fires, firework displays and visit the fair with its traditional rides. The Streets of Penzance become decked with fresh flowers, colourful banners and a wonderful array of colour.

Also the Newlyn Fish Festival is held in the area once a year on the last Monday in August. This particular festival celebrates Newlyn's history of fishing which has been an essential part of Cornish life which has assisted Penzance to become the prosperous town that it is today. During this festival, many different kinds of boat fill the entire harbour and a range of the area's regularly caught fish are on show in the local fish market. A number of stalls are available and also entertainment.

Penzance caters well for families who will find endless choices of eating and shopping facilities. The rural area around Penzance has been lived in for thousands of years providing history enthusiasts the chance to lose themselves visiting one of the many ancient monuments that still remain.

Outside of London, this area has the largest concentration of artists in the UK, resulting in numerous art galleries and studio's. The Gallery located at Penlee Park houses work by several famous artists including Stanhope Forbes. There are many great privately owned galleries to visit and nearby St Ives offers world-class galleries , for example the Tate, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and the Leach Pottery.
