The best romantic breaks

By Ethan Gilbert

In the early days of a relationship, even from courtship, things are exciting and new and that provides all of the fun you need but what about when the relationship is established and you begin ti burden each other with your problems and you have your first and second argument? You need to keep the spark alive somehow and one of the best ways to do that is to take a romantic break. Spend some time away from the worries at home and remember why you chose to care your loved one in the first place.

Italy has always been viewed as a country with some stunningly romantic settings. After all, this is the birthplace of Saint Valentine as well as Hollywood icons, Rudolf Valentino and Sophia Loren. It also has exciting if not temperamental volcanoes, stunning beaches and castles of fairytale proportions.

Venice; the city built on water allows inhabitants and visitors to bask in the glory of Grand Canal Palaces, stunning architecture and spectacular cathedrals. Venetians are inherently bohemian-chic in their fashion and renowned the world over for their voluptuous paintings, superior wines, romantic music and sumptuous food with Marco Polo spiced flavours. The narrow alleyways (known as Calli) are the places that artisans can be glimpsed whether chefs, painters or musicians, this self selecting city that forwent cars and motorways in favour of slow boats and high tides is a firm favourite for honeymoon couples.

Sicily features a wealth of Italian art and culture, which many couples find romantic. There are numerous references to literature, music and painting. The city is also known for its citric fruit blossom, olives and wine fragrances creating an aura of romance, especially for the female. There are also some wonderful ancient sites to visit such as the Valley of Temples, with Mount Etna all around you.

If money is tight, there are numerous ways you can be romantic right on your own doorstep. You could visit the local cafes in your own city and try a different coffee in each one, You could visit a book shop and read to each other from your favourite romantic classic. Or you could look at travel books or brochures and discuss places which you'd both like to visit.
