How To Pick A Camp

By Lonnie Lorenz

The experience children get when they go to summer camp is something that will affect their lives. As a parent it is important that you and your child choose the best camp together. Finding the camp that best fits your budget and your child's needs can be a daunting job. Before you send your camper to the nearest or the cheapest camp out there, you might want to consider this short guide.

Today, camp means summer programs, no longer is it the old fashioned sleep away camp of yester year. Today, kids can go to a Soccer camp, football camp or even a Teen Summer Camp. One of the most surprising things you will find out is that there are so many different types of camps. Rather than explain all the types of camps out there its best to hit the internet first. Here are a few things to look at: length, cost, distance, gender, sports and special needs.

Ask your child what he or she wants to get out of the experience. More than anything else, the goal of a summer camp is to let the kids have fun while at the same time instilling valuable life lessons. To ensure that your kid will get the best experience possible, you need to fit what they want to do with what activities a camp offers. This will enable you to shorten your list of camps to those that offer the features they will enjoy the most.

When looking for a camp one decision to be made is if you should send your child to a coed camp or a single gender. A Boys camp or a girls camp has real benefits, specially when your child get to those tween years. Society places much stress on boys and girls to impress the other gender. This pressure change a child's image of themselves as well as how they handle themselves. Single gender camp can help eliminate this and lets kids grow with out societies stress. On the other hand coed camps are like the real world and get kids involved. So why is camp not like school? Good camps will promote friendships and helps kids realize the other sex are people not objects.

So you now have your selection down to the top five camps now what? Call each camp and get their brochure and DVDs. Once you have them be sure to read and watch with your child. See what gets a positive reaction. Ask your child what they would like to go to and be sure to ask why. Now its time to go to the camp directors. Call them with a list of questions, do not assume they are a camp so they know how best to deal with your child. See what areas may be difficult for your child and what they might do to help your child. Remember with nearly thousands of camp programs if you do not feel comfortable with the camp directors, its time to move on to a new camp.
