The Historic Summer Town of St. Andrews by the Sea

By Bruce Figart

The Saint Andrews area offers an excellent standard of life with dramatic views and an uncrowded, clean environment. For over a century Saint Andrews has been attracting those of wealth and influence. Today, Saint Andrews by the Sea welcomes all visitors, interested in its beauty, shopping and fun activities.

St. Andrews is truly unique. Considering its comparatively tiny population (1800 according to the last census), this wonderful town has a public art gallery, a community college, a national marine research centre, a first class golf course and numerous other amenities often associated with larger centers. Set up in 1783, the town still retains much of its old world charm. Streets that are safe, shops that are owner-operated and original architecture are merely a few of the things you will notice about St. Andrews.

St. Andrews is cultivated Loyalist values at their finest. The order, scale and ambiance of St. Andrews reflects the practical, cleverness of these loyal subjects. It was for this reason this rustic seaport became the summer residence of choice for the wealthy and powerful, including Sir Samuel Leonard Tilly, Sir James Dunn, Sir William Van Horne and C.D. Howe.

Where Saint Andrews distinguishes itself from other communities is in the area of cultural and educational resources drawn from the various workmen and business professionals that make Saint Andrews their summer home. For facilities, the Ross Memorial Museum is wonderful in their preservation of the Town's history and artifacts. The Ross Memorial Museum is proud of its collection of 19th Century New Brunswick furniture, remarkable oriental carpets and objects d'art.

The Town of Saint Andrews is just as accessible by water as it is by land. The Town owns and operates the St. Andrews Market Wharf which lies right in the middle of the downtown plat. This multi-functional wharf offers power, water, and sewage pumpout services (all included with wharf fee). For information on the wharf please contact the Saint Andrews Wharfinger at (506) 529-5170.
